Holy Orders

The Sacrament of Holy Orders continues the priestly ministry Jesus Christ entrusted to his Apostles. Through ordained ministers, Christ continues to serve his Church; for this reason, the Catechism of the Catholic Church calls Holy Orders “the sacrament of apostolic ministry.”

The priesthood has roots in the Old Testament, when God chose the tribe of Levi to offer sacrifices and pray for his people. Christ brought this priesthood to fulfillment by offering himself upon the Cross. His sacrifice for the salvation of humanity is perfect, complete, and eternal.

At every Eucharist, the Church does not offer a new sacrifice. Through the sacred liturgy, Christ’s one eternal sacrifice is made sacramentally present. Likewise, the ministerial priesthood participates in and serves the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ.

Christ continues to call men to serve his Church as priests. If you are discerning the priesthood or wish to learn more about this vocation, please contact the parish office and speak with Fr. Stephen Burr. We would be glad to accompany you through prayer and discernment.
